Fairtrade Standards Evolution
Fairtrade is undertaking a major multi-year revamp of its three foundational standards:
- Small-Scale Producer Organizations (SPO)
- Hired Labour
- Traders
This consultation represents the most comprehensive revision in over a decade, reflecting lessons learned from field audits, producer feedback, and changes in global sustainability frameworks.
The consultation will examine:
- Stronger alignment with environmental and social due diligence frameworks (e.g. HREDD).
- Clearer differentiation between smallholder and medium-scale producers.
- Simplified requirements to enhance accessibility and reduce administrative overhead.
Stakeholders—including producer networks, business partners, and civil society groups—are encouraged to participate through workshops, written feedback, and virtual sessions. Proposed new standards will be published in early 2027, with certification transitions expected to begin in 2028.
